Symetra Edge Frontier 5-Year (Wells Fargo) review

Edge Frontier 5-Year is structurally similar to Edge Elite 5-Year but tailored for the Wells Fargo channel. It uses the same indices, the same fixed account rate, and the same death benefit structure, but reduces the first-year surrender charge to 8% and lowers the minimum premium to $10,000. There are eight indexed strategies plus a fixed account.

Why it earned this rating

Our assessment

Edge Frontier 5-Year is a Wells Fargo-channel version of Symetra's Edge Elite. It carries a slightly different surrender schedule with a lower first-year charge and a meaningfully lower minimum premium, but the trade is a slightly less flexible fee structure on the index strategies and channel-locked distribution. For Wells Fargo clients it is competitive; outside the channel it is not available.

The short version

If you are a Wells Fargo client looking at Symetra FIAs, Edge Frontier 5-Year is the version your advisor is contracted to sell. It delivers the core Symetra accumulation product with a slightly softer first-year surrender charge. The lack of an income rider remains the most important constraint.

The full review

Is Symetra Edge Frontier 5-Year a Good Annuity?

Yes, for Wells Fargo clients. It is a good fit for someone who wants a 5-year accumulation-focused FIA with a low minimum, a deep crediting menu, and Symetra's principal protection. It is not relevant for buyers outside the Wells Fargo channel because they cannot purchase it.

Why Someone Would Buy This Annuity

The main reason is accumulation with downside protection through an existing Wells Fargo advisor relationship. The secondary reason is the lower $10,000 minimum, which makes the product accessible for smaller premium amounts than the $25,000 minimum on Edge Elite. The lower first-year surrender charge of 8% (versus 9% on Edge Elite) is a small but meaningful liquidity improvement.

Who This Annuity Is Best For

I think Edge Frontier 5-Year is best for an existing Wells Fargo client who has a 5-year time horizon for a portion of retirement assets, wants principal protection, and values working with their current advisor. It is also relatively friendly to smaller account sizes given the $10,000 minimum.

What You're Really Buying Here

You are buying a tax-deferred FIA with principal protection and index-linked interest, sold exclusively through Wells Fargo. The crediting menu uses the same indices as Edge Elite — S&P 500, Nasdaq-100, Franklin Large Cap Value 15% ER, and JP Morgan ETF Efficiente 5 — across both annual point-to-point and performance-triggered methods.

How the Core Feature Works

Edge Frontier offers eight indexed strategies. Annual point-to-point crediting with cap is available on S&P 500, Nasdaq-100, and Franklin Large Cap Value 15% ER. Performance-triggered crediting pays a declared rate when the index is flat or positive. Fee-bearing strategies trade a 2.00% annual index fee for higher participation and caps. At $100,000 and above, the S&P 500 cap is 9.25%, the Franklin Large Cap Value 15% ER cap is 14.00% with a 2.00% fee, and the Nasdaq-100 cap is 9.75% with a 2.00% fee.

Why the Secondary Feature Matters

The lower $10,000 minimum is the secondary structural feature. Most Symetra FIAs require $25,000 to start, which puts them out of reach for smaller transfers or for buyers who only want to commit a modest amount. The Wells Fargo channel version brings that floor down meaningfully.

Liquidity and Surrender Schedule

Free withdrawals of up to 15% of account value are available immediately. Surrender charges run 8, 8, 8, 7, 6, then 0 percent, plus a market value adjustment. The first-year charge is 8% rather than the 9% on Edge Elite. Nursing home and terminal illness waivers may apply.

Fees and Tradeoffs

The base contract has no rider fee or annual contract fee. The fee-bearing crediting strategies all assess a 2.00% annual index fee in this version, which is higher than the 0.50% fee on the equivalent S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 strategies in Edge Elite. That uniform 2.00% fee is the main cost difference between Edge Frontier and Edge Elite. The fee is deducted whether or not the strategy earns interest.

Carrier snapshot

Symetra Life Insurance Company is part of Symetra Financial. The carrier holds an A rating from A.M. Best and an A from Standard and Poor's. This particular product is distributed exclusively through Wells Fargo.

Final take

Edge Frontier 5-Year is a workable Wells Fargo-channel version of the Symetra accumulation FIA platform. The lower minimum and softer first-year surrender charge are meaningful improvements over Edge Elite for smaller buyers, but the uniform 2.00% fee on fee-bearing crediting strategies makes those strategies less attractive than the 0.50% versions inside Edge Elite for buyers focused on the major U.S. indices. For buyers who want guaranteed lifetime income, this is not the right product.
